OK so was out walking with some neighbors the other day, and I looked liked such a a fool. Why you might ask, no not because I can't walk, although I do struggle with that act sometimes. Here is the reason why. They were picking up pieces of trash and I was not. So here it is, another wonderfully simple and brilliant idea, and I am so embarrassed that I don't do it more, so don't think that I am wagging my finger at anyone other than myself, if you are out walking, pick up and throw away (or better yet try to recycle) whatever you might find.
Now let me be clear I am not asking people to jump out of moving cars or other extreme actions if they see a gum wrapper on the side of the road. And I am not asking you to pick up dangerous or gross looking things that you may be lucky enough to find. What I am asking, is if you take your dog for a walk, or if you run, or if you are walking from the shop to your car (OK I will stop with all the different scenarios now) and you see trash, pick it up. I mean I get that we drive everywhere now, but there have to be a few times when we are not in our cars. I think I find myself picking up most of the trash that I do find in my own garden, but again if I can expand this even more, and if I can get some help, I think it would be a huge help. I mean come on, it is so easy. Just think of it as your community service sentence without having to wear an orange vest, although you can if you want.Ahhhhh there are just so many ways we can help without really do much of anything. I think you will find that I like easy. So as I said at the start, I know there are a lot of people doing this already, but lets get even more people. See I don't want much. Just want people to be aware and care enough, so that all these little acts environmental kindness turn into big acts of environmental restoration.
Thanks to all.
Right on sister green jeans! It would do me a world of good to take a decent walk every few days, and would make my dog a very happy pooch. But hey, who can stand to burn those calories? Might lead to losing a pound or two. Cough. But anyway, those of us with dogs carry around a poopie bag whenever we take a short trip with the furry four legged one. It isn't going too far out of my way to pick up a candy wrapper or what have you while I'm out there carrying an empty bag. It's going straight into the trash when I get home anyway. Why not - it's my neighborhood, unless I get very ambitious and actually hike over to the next one. I can do that. As a matter of fact I will make a point of picking up at least one piece of trash every day for the next week to see if it becomes a habit. I'll be carrying a plastic bag of poo. Not much else out there more disgusting than what I'm already picking up, right? Thanks for the motivation Charlotte :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and her friend decided all on their own to pick up trash out of the creek behind our house, and some neighbor kids made fun of them and threw their trash in the creek right in front of them. When she told me I wanted to run outside and find the little sh*ts and pull them by their ears to their mothers and find out what planet they were born on and tell them to please take themselves back there (but not so nicely). So here's something to add...encourage kids to do this too, and praise them for it, and start ridiculing the lazy little sh*ts that think the world is their own personal trash can and also their parents that teach them to think that way.
